When you’re teaching newcomer ESL students, you quickly learn that simple doesn’t always mean easy. Getting them to use correct grammar — especially when they’re still learning the basics — can be a challenge. That’s why I lean on tools that keep things structured but fun… like grammar task cards.

Why Task Cards Work with Beginners
Task cards give your students just enough information to work with — not too much to overwhelm them, and not too little to leave them guessing. Whether you’re introducing subject pronouns, articles, or simple present tense, task cards keep things bite-sized and interactive.
Here’s what I love about using them:
- They’re print-and-go (or use them digitally)
- Great for stations, partner work, or quick warm-ups
- Easy to differentiate by pairing stronger students with newcomers
- Students stay engaged and moving — especially helpful if phones are now banned in your classroom
